The Ultimate UGA Move-Out Checklist for Summer 2026
Finals are hard enough without worrying about moving. Here's everything University of Georgia students need to do before leaving Athens for the summer — organized by timeline so nothing slips through the cracks.
2+ Weeks Before Move-Out (Mid-April)
- ☐Book summer storage. Whether you go with a door-to-door service like Sic'em Storage or a self-storage unit, book early. Spots fill up fast near UGA, especially in April and May.
- ☐Check your dorm checkout date. UGA typically requires checkout within 24 hours of your last final. Confirm your exact deadline with University Housing.
- ☐Decide what to keep, sell, or donate. Be ruthless. That futon you bought freshman year? Probably not worth storing. UGA Surplus and Athens ReUse can take donations.
- ☐Start packing non-essentials. Off-season clothes, decorations, extra bedding — pack them now so move-out week isn't chaos.
- ☐Forward your mail. Set up USPS mail forwarding to your home address so nothing gets sent to your Athens address over summer.
1 Week Before Move-Out (Late April)
- ☐Deep clean your room. UGA charges cleaning fees if your room isn't left in reasonable condition. Wipe surfaces, vacuum, clean the bathroom.
- ☐Document room condition. Take photos of everything — walls, furniture, floors. If housing tries to charge you for pre-existing damage, you have proof.
- ☐Return library books and equipment. UGA charges holds on your account for unreturned items. Check the Main Library, Science Library, and any department equipment.
- ☐Cancel or pause local subscriptions. Gym memberships, meal plans, parking passes — don't pay for 3 months of services you won't use.
- ☐Pack your storage boxes. If you're using Sic'em Storage, your boxes and QR stickers are already delivered. Pack them up, stick on the QR codes, and you're ready.
Move-Out Week (May 4–6, 2026)
- ☐Schedule your storage pickup. Sic'em Storage picks up May 4–6. Choose your slot when you book — we come right to your room.
- ☐Remove all personal items. Check closets, drawers, under the bed, bathroom cabinets. The stuff you forget is the stuff you miss most.
- ☐Remove all wall decorations. Take down Command strips carefully. Fill any nail holes with white toothpaste (old RA trick) to avoid damage charges.
- ☐Check out with your RA. Return your room key, complete the room condition report, and get written confirmation of checkout.
- ☐Do a final sweep. Walk through one more time. Check the fridge, microwave, window sills, and any shared spaces.
After You Leave
- ☐Track your stored boxes. If you're using QR-tracked storage, scan your codes to confirm everything was received and check status throughout summer.
- ☐Update your fall delivery address. Moving to a new dorm or apartment? Update your delivery info before August 1st to avoid fees.
- ☐Check for housing charges. Monitor your UGA account for any unexpected charges from housing. Dispute early if needed.
Pro Tips from UGA Students
- Start packing during dead week — not during finals. Your brain will thank you.
- Label every box with contents + which room it goes in. Future you will appreciate this in August.
- Don't store food. Even sealed food attracts pests in Athens heat. Eat it, donate it, or toss it.
- Take a video walkthrough of your room before and after cleaning for a bulletproof record.
- Coordinate with roommates. Figure out who's taking shared items (trash can, Brita, etc.) before the last day.
