Can I Ship Packages to UGA Before Move-In? (2026 Guide)

Short answer: no, not directly to the residence hall. UGA front desks don't accept packages until August 14, 2026. Here's what happens if you ship anyway, and the three workarounds parents actually use.

The August 14 embargo, in one sentence

UGA residence halls (Russell, Brumby, ECV, Myers, Reed, Creswell, Hill Community, all of them) don't have package-receiving staffed until move-in day. Boxes that show up at the dorm address before August 14, 2026 either get refused at the door, held briefly and returned, or — in the worst case — sit on a loading dock and disappear.

What actually happens if you ship anyway

Every major carrier handles the "dorm address that won't accept packages yet" case a little differently — but none of them are good for you.

UPS

Returns to sender if the residence hall front desk isn't accepting yet. You eat the return shipping + restocking fee on whatever you ordered.

FedEx

Same — return-to-sender after 2 failed delivery attempts. Packages with no signature option may be left on a loading dock and disappear.

USPS

Holds at the nearest post office for 15 days, then returns. If your student hasn't moved in by day 15, the package goes home.

Amazon (their own delivery)

Marks the address as undeliverable on the first attempt and issues an automatic refund. You then have to re-order at current (often higher) prices.

The net cost of a returned package isn't just the shipping — it's the restocking fee (often 15-20%), the refund-then-reorder gap where prices may have gone up, and the simple fact that the thing your student needs is now not in Athens when they arrive.

If you've been ordering on Amazon, Target, or Walmart and need a place to send things now, here's what works:

Sic'em Storage — Drop & Hold

Cheapest

$99 (sale) / $129 regular

Who it's for: Parents sending 4-8 small Amazon / Target / dorm-decor orders that all fit in one large box.

Pros

  • Ship to our Athens facility anytime over the summer
  • We photograph each package on arrival so you have receipt confirmation
  • Climate-controlled storage until move-in day
  • Delivered to your student's residence hall on August 14
  • Athens shipping address emailed the moment you book

Cons

  • All packages must fit in one 24×18×18 box (overflow = upgrade or extra box fee)
  • Each individual package needs to be under 30 lbs

Sic'em Storage — Ship & Store

For bigger shipments

$249 (sale) / $299 regular

Who it's for: Out-of-state families shipping the whole dorm load — pre-packed boxes, bedding, mini-fridge, multiple parcels.

Pros

  • Up to 6 full boxes included
  • Oversized items accepted (mini-fridge, monitors, desk pieces)
  • Same Aug 14 delivery to the dorm
  • Same Athens receiving + photo confirmation

Cons

  • More than you need if you're just sending a few small Amazon orders
  • $50 oversize-box fee per box over 30 lbs or larger than 24×18×18

Friend or family in Athens

Free (with strings)

Free

Who it's for: Families who already know someone living in Athens year-round who's willing to receive, store, and deliver.

Pros

  • Zero out-of-pocket cost
  • Personal relationship — no SLA confusion

Cons

  • You're asking a friend for a pretty big favor (receiving + storage space + Aug 14 delivery)
  • No photo confirmation, no insurance, no climate control
  • Most parents don't actually have this option — Athens is a college town, not a hometown for most UGA families

How to set up Drop & Hold in 5 steps

1

Book Drop & Hold (or Ship & Store) online

Takes ~2 minutes. We email you the Athens facility address the moment payment clears.

2

Use the Athens address at Amazon / Target / etc.

On Amazon, save it as a new shipping address called 'Sic'em — Athens.' On Target/Walmart, add it as a new address book entry. Whenever your student is buying something for the dorm, ship it there.

3

Use the format we send you

Line 1 should be your student's full name, line 2 'c/o Sic'em Storage,' then our street address. The c/o line is how our receiving team matches each box to your booking.

4

We photograph + text you on each arrival

You'll get an SMS the moment each box lands, with a quick intake photo. Acts as a receipt + lets you verify the order arrived intact.

5

Move-in day delivery

On August 14 (or whatever date you picked at checkout), the consolidated box is at your student's residence hall when they arrive. Walk in, the stuff is there.

Common questions

What is the UGA package embargo?+

UGA Housing's policy is that residence hall front desks don't begin accepting packages for incoming students until move-in day — August 14, 2026. Before that date, the residence halls don't have a place to hold them, the front desks aren't staffed for it, and most carriers will return packages or refuse delivery.

Does the embargo apply to every UGA residence hall?+

Yes — Russell, Brumby, ECV, Myers, Reed, Creswell, Hill Community, and every other residence hall follow the same policy. The exact reopening date for the front desks is August 14, 2026.

What about off-campus apartments?+

Off-campus apartments around Athens have their own policies. Most leases for incoming fall students don't start until early August, so even off-campus addresses often won't work for July shipments. Drop & Hold solves this the same way — ship to Athens, we deliver to the apartment on move-in day.

Can I just ship USPS and have my student pick up at the post office?+

Technically yes, but USPS only holds packages for 15 days. If your shipment arrives before your student moves to Athens, it'll go back. And USPS won't accept packages addressed to a dorm room number that isn't active.

What if I only have one or two packages to ship?+

Drop & Hold works for any number from 1 up to whatever fits in one large 24×18×18 box. No minimum. The $99 (sale) / $129 (regular) flat rate covers it.

What if I'm shipping a mini-fridge or something oversized?+

Drop & Hold's per-package limit is 30 lbs and the package has to fit inside our standard large box. For mini-fridges, monitors, microwaves, desk furniture, etc. — use Ship & Store, which accepts oversized items for a $50/box surcharge.

How early can my student actually move in?+

UGA's official move-in window is August 14-17, but some students arrive earlier through the early-move-in program (Aug 7-9 for athletes, RAs, certain student groups). If your student has an early move-in date, just pick it at checkout — we'll deliver then.

What if a package gets delivered after I've already booked Drop & Hold?+

Perfect — that's what the service is for. As long as you booked first (so we have your name on file at the facility), any package addressed to our Athens location with your student's name + 'c/o Sic'em Storage' on it gets matched to your booking when it arrives.

The bottom line

You can't reliably ship to a UGA residence hall address before August 14, 2026. Carriers will refuse, return, or auto-refund packages, and your student arrives without the things you bought for them.

For a few Amazon orders, Sic'em Storage's Drop & Hold tier is the cheapest fix at $99 (sale) / $129 regular — one Athens address, photo confirmation on every package, delivered to the dorm on move-in day.

For bigger shipments (the whole dorm load, mini-fridge included), Ship & Store covers up to 6 full boxes plus oversized items at $249 (sale) / $299 regular.

Either way: book first, ship second. The shipping address gets emailed the moment you book, so you can plug it into Amazon / Target / Walmart that same day.
